Nissan Motor India Private Limited, the Indian subsidiary of Japanese autogiant Nissan, owns a fleet of vehicles, belonging to almost every segment from hatchback to SUV in the country. In the entry-level saloon segment, it offers the Sunny sedan which is truly a royal wagon to drive. Nissan Sunny hit the Indian shores firstly in 2011 and it was received considerably well by the auto freaks in India. But along the course of time it lost its glory and hence, in an awe to re-create the enigma and panache, the company has launched the second generation of the entry-level saloon in the country being cited as ‘Nissan Sunny’. Nissan Sunny Exteriors

The Sunny is a unique offering, the car is only slightly more expensive than the best selling compact sedans but offers much more boot space and rear knee-room, not to forget comfort features as well. The company shifted its focus to the Terrano and more recently the Datsun Go, but the sedan has finally received an update. The biggest change is the new face, gone is the more rounded headlamp and in comes a sharp and larger unit following the boomerang design theme seen in various other Nissan models internationally. The increase in size makes it look out of place from most angles. The boxy grille has grown downwards and mimics the styling seen in the more premium Altima/Teana models. The fog lamp inserts even feature chrome garnishing while a chrome lip is also present in the top XV variant. There is an abundance of chrome but it actually adds a bit of elegance and presence since it contrasts well – especially if the Sunny is of a darker shade like the new Nightshade you see here. The sides are more or less the same, the fender design has been cleverly integrated into the new bumper and headlamp. The only additions being new Y-shaped alloy wheels that look unique and the window sealers that now get chrome detailing. The rear end is also different, the new bumper flows with the existing shoulder line and protrudes outward like a skirt. The rear garnish is larger while the antenna has now moved to the rear end of the roof. Parking sensors also make it to the top variant while the tail lamps are same as before.

For a car called the Sunny, you’d expect things to be all fun and lively on the inside but unfortunately, the car is a complete contradiction to its name. The interiors are a single shade of grey which give it a dull and monotonous feel to the extent that you start craving for a dash of colour. The door trim is the only part that breaks the monotony on the inside, but it doesn’t do enough. Diverting the attention from the monochrome interior is the round instrument console that is a straight lift from the Micra, which in fact is an extremely smart cost-cutting move from Nissan but reflects poorly on the brand appeal. Speaking of which, the dedicated vents for the passengers on the rear bench are another smart incorporation, especially as they’re not directly connected to the air-conditioning system but simply employ a blower to pull in the cool cabin air from the front to circulate it to the rear! Despite trying to keep costs low, the plastics and the quality of the interiors thankfully seems upmarket.

On the comfort end of things, the Sunny does not take a back seat. Space is in plentiful, at the front as well as the rear – in fact it is more spacious than anything that we have ever seen in the segment and although it is nicely spaced out it still manages to form that quintessential cocoon around the driver’s seat. The rear bench is comfortable and can seat three adults with ease without them having to constantly battle for shoulders and leg room. In fact only after getting into the rear seat you realise the size and the comfort that the car delivers. Even with the front seat pushed right back, there is still ample leg and knee room for the rear passenger, which in itself speaks a lot about the generous cabin and the comfort factor it provides. The good news carries on to the boot as well which is a decently sized one capable of gobbling up 490 litres of luggage – ideal when off on a vacation with the whole family.

The Japanese automaker Nissan has presented the entry-level saloon Sunny in both petrol and diesel guises. The company has refrained from making any modifications in the Sunny; hence, retaining the engine specifications of the same phased out model. The petrol variants carry a 1.5-litre motor with them which has Electronic Fuel Injection Control as fuel system. The 1498 cc, 4-cylinder, 16-valve engine is being christened as ‘HR 15’. It is capable of churning out a top power of 98 bhp at 6000 rpm with the manual variants while the automatic variant gets an exceeded power of 2 bhp which makes it 100 bhp at 5600 rpm. Though, torque remains common in form of 134Nm at 4000 rpm for both the manual as well as automatic variants. The engine gets coupled with either a 5-speed manual transmission or a XTronic CVT transmission.

On the other hand, the diesel avatars of Sunny are being offered with 1.5-litre K9K dCi engine which has been re-tuned to yeild a better fuel economy. The 1461 cc motor has Common Rail fuel system and it generates a maximum power output of 84 bhp at 3750 rpm along with a peak torque performance of 200 Nm at 2000 rpm. Sadly, there is not an automatic transmission on offer in the diesel fuel trim and the company has opted for its conventional 5-speed manual transmission in an awe to maximize mileage and performance.

Nissan Sunny Driving Dynamics

The front MacPherson strut and the rear torsion bar suspension set-up works well for the Sunny and is a blessing on the kind of roads found in India. It is very forgiving and can take on any pothole or bump without sending you straight to the first spinal cord clinic en route! This works against the Vettel types who would seem to be all at sea with the car wallowing in the high speed corners but then there is always the 370Z and the GTR for this lot. Excellent ground clearance is another major attribute for our terrain, yes, urban and rural and thanks are also due to the 185/65-R15 tyres (ours was the top-of-the-line offering which has this size rubber while the other two versions make do with 185/70-R14 Bridgestones) for the fine poise and the ride quality. Nissan always has taken care of this aspect cautiously and subsequently it has returned rich dividends to the company. In Sunny sedan, it has incorporated disc as front brakes while the rear braking system is drum. This primary braking system is complimented extremely well by the trio of Antilock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA) in each and every variant of this sedan. Nissan Sunny Verdict

Even though the Nissan Sunny has its pros and cons, it brings into the segment all that a buyer looks for with unmatchable features like keyless entry, a sporty button start, and steering mounted controls among other features. In a budding segment where space matters the most, Nissan has played its cards to perfection at its first attempt. Although the Rs 7.68 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) price of the top end petrol variant may seem expensive on paper, with the kind of features and superior comfort that the car offers, it is definitely a good option to consider especially keeping in mind the fact that the Yokohama based company is already expanding its dealer and service network in India. Nissan’s growing brand image aside, the Sunny definitely seems like it’s a leading contender for the throne as far as this segment is concerned and with the advent of its diesel-engined version, the Sunny side up story is just unfolding
