BMW X6 Overview
With the BMW X5 finally making its debut, it’s time to start thinking about the next-generation of the X6, a model that is essentially the X5 but with that coupe-style roof. With the current X6 being on the market for just three years, we probably won’t see the new X6 until at least 2020, but you can bet BMW is already hard at work. And, thanks to these new renderings that fuse the X6’s coupe-like styling with the look of the new X5, we have a strong visual representation of what we can expect. With that in mind, BMW focused on improving the X6 in just about every area, including a 20-pound diet. Sure, that’s not much considering the X6 tips the scales at over 4,600 pounds, but it’s a worthy achievement for a vehicle that’s longer and wider than the one it replaces. Besides gaining a crisper appearance that blends many cues already seen on 2014 model year BMWs, the coupe SUV also boasts updated technology and a slightly roomier interior.Engine-wise, only one engine available in the United States has been uprated. Unfortunately, BMW is still stubborn enough not to send a diesel mill over the Pond, so you’ll have to settle for the 3.0-liter gasoline version if you’re looking for something more efficient.
BMW X6 Look
Outlandish is the first world that your brain churns when you see the new BMW X6M. The grand proportions of muscles and contours flowing all over this jacked up coupe inspired vehicle ditch the conventionally boring straights and squares of an orthodox SUV design.Bold and brash is the front profile with large headlights further accentuating its menacing presence. The larger kidney grille gets a bright surround and also features vertical slats along with a camera nicely slotted under the model label. The long and contoured hood features character lines that drop a hint of the beasty of a motor underneath it. The front bumper looks interestingly complicated with multiple scoops and fog lamps. These air pockets lend a visual appeal for sure as they look capable of swallowing a hatchback but also offer functional value to help cool the motor inside.
While the front face is similar to that of the X5M, the X6M is a tad wider in profile. However, the similarities end at the face itself because when you see the X6M along its length, it looks like no other vehicle with its sloping roofline which flows in an angular way from the front before merging with the shot and butch rear. The shoulder line remains strong as it climbs all the way to the rear.It being a vehicle of larger dimensions doesn’t look bulky at all. The contrasting combination of a SUVish car with a sedan like window line gives it an amazing silhouette. Also, adding an important touch to the rear half is a strong profile line which highlights the rear wheel arch, breaking the mono flow on the wedge line running along the shoulder.
This one too runs on M special 20-inch wheels with Pirelli PZero tyres; they look absolutely smashing especially with the five spoke machined finish on the alloys. The rocker molding on the lower half are placed lower on the M models and blend well with the side skirts.
BMW X6 Comfort
Once inside, you witness a cabin which is very typical of a BMW vehicle, with the layout being very common among its sibling. You do however get twin AC vents on the right most and left most side of the dashboard. Cabin quality is almost faultless with fit and finish levels being truly phenomenal. The dashboard gets a dark wood insert while the glovebox is very different, it’s not the usual pull down type and instead there is a button below the AC vent which opens a rather small glove box. However there are plenty of storage bins inside the cabin, including one below the centre arm rest. The instrument cluster is easy to read and you also get a heads-up display which shows the speed in your line of sight.
The seats of the BMW X6 are simply fantastic, offering terrific support all around. With the luxury package, one can get special comfort seats which have active seat ventilation, heating and lumbar support. The cabin feels rich in every way and there is plenty of space for four adults. Legroom is good and headroom is decent but a fifth passenger just won’t be able to sit because the sloping roof has cabin lights in the centre, thereby comprising on headroom of the fifth passenger. There is a small storage area on each side of the rear seat. The BMW X6 features a 4-zone climate control and also has an LCD screen for rear seat passengers (placed right behind the front arm rest) which plays multiple video formats including AUX and DVD. The doors which have wood, leather and aluminium on them are heavy but you don’t have to take much effort to close them as they have a suction mechanism which pulls them back into closed position.
The iDrive system shows an array of data, including torque distribution on each wheel. There are quite a few cameras including 360-degree view. Off-road cameras are placed on either side of the front bumper, while three cameras are placed on the roof to show what’s around you. There is a reverse camera as well with directional marking which is important as rear visibility is poor due to the small rear windshield. The multimedia system has navigation which is quite accurate. Right below the audio system are buttons for the cameras, traction control, boot opening, etc. The boot opens electronically and shuts down with a touch of a button. There is a charging port inside the boot, probably to power your portable refrigerator. BMW X6 Gearbox
Expect the X6 to drop the 35i trim and carry on its next run at life with the 40i being the entry-level model. Power output should mirror that of the X5, too will the 40i delivering 340 horsepower and 331 pound-feet of torque. The 50i name will carry over but will deliver a slight increase in power as well, bring total output up to 462 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. The 40i will use the usual inline-six configuration and will be paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The 50i gets the same transmission but is, of course, a V-8.
There will also be two diesel engines available, however, these weren’t available in the U.S. with the current-gen model so they too may be limited to other markets this time around. I’m talking about the 30d trim with a diesel-drinking inline-six that’s good for 265 horsepower and the V-8 50d with 400 horsepower and 560 pound-feet of torque. Don’t hold your breath on these to cross the pond but if you live anywhere in Europe, they should be a prime offering.
As far as towing goes, the X6 has traditionally offered the same capacity as the X5, so you can expect to haul as much as 2,700 kg or about 6,000 pounds. Because of the X6’s sleeker design and the new active grille system, the X6 may end up being a little more fuel efficient this time around though, so it will definitely have that going for it. Expect total payload numbers to carry over unchanged, which should be fine given the limited space in the boot.
BMW X6 Rideing
BMW’s are known to be driving machines, the X6’s weight tries to make an exception here. With significant amount of weight under its belly, the X6’s heaviness is felt at high speeds and it has quite a bit of body roll. The vehicle gets bouncy on bad roads and the run flat tyres really don’t help matters much. Surprisingly this BMW has a space saver spare wheel but still BMW has opted for run flat tyres, which do end up spoiling the ride quality to a certain extent. The vehicle is on the stiffer side but still glides on good roads, only to be unsettled on large bumps. BMW doesn’t offer mode selection on this variant of the X6 and you can’t choose between Comfort or Sport, surprising.
High speed stability is excellent and although it’s not as sharp as other BMWs, its still much ahead of its key rivals (from the SUV segment). The steering is a delight and has immense feel and feedback. It isn’t much heavy at low speeds but as you go faster, the steering simply comes into its own, offering a very tactile feel to the drive. Brakes are very sure footed and have terrific stopping power, with the pedal feel being extremely positive. The X6 has good off-road ability and can easily traverse most terrains, thereby offering an splendid balance of good on and off-road driving.

Among the safety features on offing six airbags, stability control, traction control, dynamic stability control including dynamic traction control, cornering brake control, side impact protection, engine vehicle immobilizer, crash sensor and hill descent control are included.

BMW X6 Bottomline
Clearly, the BMW X6M is not meant for everyone as there would be some acting cynical about the way it looks but there exists a sizeable audience who are in love with this spruced up SUV. Call it names like Sports Activity Coupe and what not but the only way to really connect with this car is by referring it as The Hulk. Till the time you don’t tease it, the X6M is calm and will try and act obedient but the moment you manage to get it angry, it unleashed its real self and that is where you realize what 750Nm thrown through all wheels mean.
Kindly do not confuse it for anything else as the X6M will not see much of off-road but more of smooth sailing tarmac. It is that type of a ride which can be a wingman to you when you hit a popular club. Overall, we would definitively recommend this, if you have an appetite for living an outlandish lifestyle.
